Dederang - Mt. Beauty
Nestled in the Kiewa Valley just 50kms towards the Snowy Mountains, lies the tiny township of Dederang. For years Hollywood megastar Mel Gibson used this valley hideaway to recharge his batteries.
The Kiewa River, which runs through the valley, provides some of the most challenging and rewarding trout fishing in the region. Annually in the New Year, Dederang hosts a picnic race meeting on a track where the horses momentarily disappear from the crowd’s view. Dederang also host an annual competition to decide Australia’s gumboot throwing champion.
Anglers and scenic sightseers, however, are warned to keep a wary eye out in the early morning and evening for the dairy herds making their way to the milking sheds.
At the head of the fertile Kiewa Valley, tucked in under Victoria’s highest mountain, Mt Bogong just over an hours drive from Beechworth you will find Mount Beauty.
Initially developed in 1949 to house workers during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric scheme, Mount Beauty is a very popular base for outdoor activities.
Activities include; horse riding on the High Plains, bush walking in the Alpine National Park, mountain bike riding along bush tracks, fishing in the Kiewa River and Falls Creek ski fields are just a short drive away. Events include Mount Beauty Music Muster in April, Kangaroo Hoppet XC Ski Race in August and National Mountain Bike Championships each October/November.
