Easter Saturday Fun Run / Walk
Beechworth Fun Run gets bigger and better each year
The Beechworth Fun Run is growing each year as word gets out about what a great event it is. More than 440 participants enjoyed the Beechworth Fun Run last year. Because of the growing numbers, online registrations via the Beechworth Fun Run website proved very successful last year and are available again this year www.beechworthfunrun.com.au
So what makes it so popular? The 10 k event is a very scenic and diverse route through the wonderful bushland gorge, the streets of Beechworth historic town, past Lake Samball and finally through the golf course. All this is on mostly bitumen, a small bit of flat gravel and tracks through the golf course. According to local runner Wendy McDougall "it's the best run in Australia". The course is a good challenge for very experienced runners but also just a lovely walk for those who are not so fit.
The 3km run sees people who are starting out on their fitness climb, lots of families, prams and dogs participating. Maree Nankervis was a bit surprised when her 9 year old son Jack beat her and his aunt last year, but they did go on to come second in the family section. She said "he well and truly whipped us". The Beechworth Gold Easter Fun Run/Walk has been recognised by 'Run 4 Your Life' Magazine as the 2010 'Most Family Friendly' Run & as one of their 'Must Do' runs for 2010.
The autumn weather just begs you to be out enjoying the outdoors and it's the start of a long weekend that can then be spent discovering all the Beechworth activities.
The event, held on Easter Saturday each year, is run by the Beechworth Secondary College as their major fundraiser and is part of the town’s Golden Horseshoe Festival.
Race Coordinator, Karen Nankervis, said "We have worked hard to attract participants from all ages and fitness levels. We have lots of families that participate together in the 3km section or families that have one parent doing the 10km and the other taking the children in the 3km. We have categories for schools and teams and encourage participants to bring their dogs along."
A new category is also being added, following feedback from runners. The 10km will now include a Veterans section for those 50 years and over on race day.
The event this year is on Saturday 23rd April, with the race starting at 9am from the Beechworth Secondary College in Balaclava Road.
Registrations will be accepted on the day from 7.30am and there will be a BBQ breakfast and coffee van available also from 7.30am.Registrations are available online at www.beechworthfunrun.com.au
