Burke Museum uncovers hidden Beechworth treasure

A window to Beechworth Past
Experience one of regional Victoria's undiscovered treasures - the Burke Museum.
In 1863 the Museum was added to the Beechworth Athenaeum and Public Library building in honour of Robert O'Hara Burke the explorer. Burke had served as superintendent of Police at Beechworth from 1854 to 1858.
Discover the early collections of the Museum, including Aboriginal artefacts from south-eastern Australia purchased in 1868 and an unusal natural history collection of the 1860's.
- Learn about life, law and order on the Beechworth goldfield.
- Examine one of the original Ned Kelly Death Masks and learn about Ned Kelly's association with Beechworth.
- See the Beechworth Chinese Community collection, including a small number of 19th century Chinese banners.
- Experience the sights and sounds in the 'Street of Shops', a reproduction of Beechworth's streetscape last century.
- Changing temporary exhibitions throughout the year include objects from the collection and address aspects of local history.
- A variety of interesting travelling exhibitions.
Family History Research Service The Museum is the custodian of a substantial holding of archive material relating to Beechworth and the North East of Victoria.
Records include:
- Rate books for the Municipality of Beechworth from 1856; Local court records; Mining registers - including: water rights, mining claims, Mining Warden's reports; Electoral Rolls and Directories - including: 1857 Ovens Directory, 1866 Beechworth Directory; Indexes to Beechworth pioneers; Photographs of Beechworth's pioneers; Street directories;
- Local newspapers from 1855 - present - (The Ovens and Murray Advertiser; The Constitution and Ovens Mining Intelligencer and The Ovens Register).
